A 27-year-old man suspected of stabbing a 69-year-old woman on a stationary train in Antwerp-Central station on Thursday 4 April has had his detention upheld by the Antwerp council chamber. The victim suffered serious injuries.
The knife attack seemingly happened without apparent cause. The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter, within the main Antwerp station building.
In the days leading up to the assault, the man had repeatedly caught police attention, but each incident resulted in his release.
An investigation is underway to determine his motivations. A psychiatric expert has also been assigned to the case.
