The Council Chamber of Ghent has extended the arrest warrant for a motorist involved in a fatal collision with two cyclists in Ghent in February.
The incident occurred on 25 February near the Ghent port around 11 am, when the 45-year-old motorist hit a group of five cyclists using a cycle path.
Two men, both in their forties, were killed in the accident. The other three cyclists were injured, one seriously.
The driver was found to have elevated alcohol levels in his blood.
The concerned individual was placed under arrest by the investigating judge for unintentional homicide of two people in traffic, and unintentional assault and battery, with his driving rights revoked.
Early findings from the traffic expert’s investigation and surveillance footage indicate that the accident resulted from the driver’s poor handling and excessive speed.
The driver claims he has no recollection of the accident.
