This summer, Middelkerke Beach's renowned sand sculpture festival will be taking visitors on a world tour – with Egyptian sphinxes and exotic temples – for this year's edition, revealed festival organisers on Tuesday.

According to Middelkerke Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker (West Flanders), the festival aligns perfectly with their image of a family-friendly seaside resort.

This year’s sand sculpture festival will broaden its horizons, featuring not only sphinxes but also African wildlife, the Taj Mahal, Japanese temples, Easter Island, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, and impressions of cities like New York and London.

Over 20 international artists will spend ten days crafting numerous sculptures from over 5,000 tons of sand across a site exceeding 5,000 square meters near Arthur De Greef Square. The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Around the World in Sand”.

Visitors can not only admire the sand sculptures but also take part in workshops to create their own.

Despite poor weather during last summer’s festival, which attracted “only” 85,000 visitors, the event drew 100,000 visitors in 2022.

This year’s sand sculpture festival will run from 28 June to 8 September. Information and tickets are available at www.zandsculpturenfestival.be.
