From Tuesday, an STIB bus sporting rainbow colours will drive through Belgium, in anticipation of The Belgian Pride on 18 May.

As part of the celebration, existing rainbow zebra crossings will be refreshed with a new lick of colour, and two additional ones will be introduced in Jette.

Furthermore, traffic lights will be altered and the fountains at Simonis and Montgomery, as well as the tunnels on the small ring, will be adorned with bespoke lighting.

"In all of Europe, the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals are being called into question," explains Brussels Minister of Mobility, Elke Van den Brandt (Groen). "Their safety and health are at risk simply for being true to their identity. For these many people, discrimination is a daily reality."

She goes on to stress the enduring relevance of Pride. "Hence, the relevance of rainbows on our streets. These act as clear indicators that all are welcome in our public spaces, and that the fight for equal rights must continue unabated every day."
