Just four days after a storm swept across Belgium, with record amounts of rain falling in Limburg, a second intense precipitation zone will arrive later on Monday. Code yellow has again been issued.

On Monday, a zone of heavy rain and showers, linked to a depression near Brittany, will pass over Belgium from France. "It will produce intense and thundery showers at times," the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) noted. "These showers will move slowly, so there is a risk of localised heavy precipitation in a short period."

The disturbance will hover over the north of the country near the Dutch border during evening and overnight. The RMI has therefore issued code yellow for heavy rain in Antwerp and Limburg from 14:00 on Monday until 09:00 on Tuesday.

"There may be local quantities of more than 20 mm in six hours and/or 25 mm in 24 hours; very locally, quantities of more than 40 mm in 24 hours cannot be ruled out," it warned. A similar phenomenon was seen during last week's storm, which mainly impacted Limburg and Antwerp. In one Limburg town, a record 88 mm of rain fell in one hour.

Due to the forecasted weather, the Home Affairs Ministry has activated the helpline number 1722. Anyone who has suffered storm or water damage requiring assistance from the fire brigade can apply via the e-counter or call the number 1722. The emergency number 112 can only be called for potentially life-threatening situations.

Forecast for coming days

The storm will move south on Tuesday. In the north, it will remain cloudy with some light rain, while in the south, it will be mostly dry with sunshine. By the afternoon, there will be more clouds and showers over the south, and wide clear skies and dry spells over the north. Temperatures will fluctuate between 13°C and 18°C.

From Wednesday, a high-pressure core over the British Isles and later over the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea will provide mostly dry weather in a northerly to northeasterly flow. The sun will appear by the sea and in the west. Elsewhere, it will remain cloudy and dry.

By midday on Thursday, the sun will break through and, especially over Flanders and Brussels, there will be broad clearings at times. Temperatures will reach 19°C in the centre of the country.

The weekend is forecast to be dry and sunny with temperatures reaching 22°C locally.
