Germany’s federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they had searched the office of AfD MEP Maximilian Krah at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The operation is linked to suspicions of spying for China by Jian G., an ex-assistant of Krah, who was recently detained.

Krah, the far-right party’s lead candidate in the June elections, is not the target of the investigation.

The search of his office forms part of a procedure "related to witnesses," according to a statement from the prosecutors.

The European Parliament gace its consent for the German police to enter the premises. A flat belonging to Jian G. in Brussels was already searched on 24 April 2024.

Since 2019, Jian G. has been working for Maximilian Krah. He was arrested in Germany in mid-April. The AfD subsequently stated that it had dismissed him from his duties with immediate effect.
