Multiple diversions planned due to the renovation of the Léonard Junction will result in significant traffic congestion on Friday, according to the Agency for Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer – AWV).

The work, originally scheduled for Thursday night into Friday, between midnight and 5 a.m, has been postponed to day time on Friday.

The Léonard Tunnel, located at the junction of the Brussels Ring (R0) and the E411 motorway in Tervuren, has undergone major renovations since April 2023.

On Friday afternoon, both the Ring tunnel and the E411 tunnel will completely shut. The E411 tunnel will be lifted using temporary jacks and the old steel supports will be removed overnight between Friday and Saturday. These will then be replaced by a large new jack.

Motorists coming from Zaventem and heading to Namur will need to go as far as Groenendaal to turn around on Friday.

The AWV mentions that the logistics of the lifting operation took longer than estimated, leading to the change in schedule.

The agency thus advises drivers to avoid the Léonard Junction and its surroundings all day on Friday, especially from midday onwards.

Serious disruptions are also expected on the eastern ring and the E411 on Sunday 12 May, as holiday-goers return home. The Flemish Traffic Centre predicts waiting times of at least an hour.
