Prince Laurent, brother of Belgium's King Philippe, has applied for social security coverage through a Brussels court, L’Avenir reported on Thursday.

Although he receives an allocation, Prince Laurent lacks social security coverage. He has therefore took legal action against the Union of Middle Classes (UCM) and the National Institute of Social Security for Workers, INASTI, in the French-speaking Labour Court of Brussels.

He filed his lawsuit in May 2023 at a preliminary hearing of the court. He is now represented by Olivier Ricjkaert, a lawyer who specialises in social rights.

Lawyer Rijckaert has confirmed that proceedings have been initiated but declined to comment further.

Closing arguments will be heard on 18 November at the 11th Chamber of the Labour Court in Brussels.
