Heavy rainfall in Liège province has led to several rivers and waterways overflowing.
Streets in Plombières, Aubel, Olne, Herve, Thimister and Welkenraedt are under water as firefighters from Vesdre, Hoëgne and Plateau try to manage the situation.
The rain is forecast by Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute to leave Liège province around 11 pm and move towards France.
“We have seen an average of 20 to 40l/m² of rainfall from Gaume to the Liège region to Ardennes. There have been more sizeable localised downpours, with peaks of 50 to 55l/m² along the Luxembourg border. Very occasionally, it reached between 60 to 85l/m², particularly between Herve and Saive,” meteorologist Michael Bleret stated, adding that Berwinne and Geule probably remain under flood risk throughout the night.
Hervé Jamar, governor of Liège province, announced on Friday evening that, due to the heavy rainfall in the region, a provincial crisis management phase has been initiated.
