Renewable energy sources, specifically wind and solar, supplied 27.2% of Belgium’s total electricity demand in 2023, according to new data released by the Electricity and Gas Regulation Commission (CREG).

June 2023 saw the highest monthly figure ever recorded, with renewables accounting for 34.7% of the total demand. “For the first time, over one-third of monthly electricity consumption was provided by renewable sources,” the federal regulator stated.

The synergies between wind and solar were pronounced. While solar panels primarily generate electricity during summer months, wind energy dominates in winter. Consequently, even in November and December 2023, close to 30% of demand was met by renewables.

The increasing installation of solar panels and wind turbines was identified as the reason for the rise in renewable energy's share.

In 2023, wind turbines and solar panels made up 45% of the total installed capacity.
