The Belgian federal police have launched a nation-wide drug and alcohol-free weekend driving campaign on Friday afternoon in Châtelet.

This operation, which involves a variety of police zones, lasts from Friday to Sunday.

The federal police organise these missions many times a year, preventively, with the aim of emphasising the importance of sober driving, says Grégory Blaise, Commissioner within the Federal Road Police.

However, Blaise notes that these checks can lead to enforcement actions, with prosecutions and fines for drivers found to be in breach.

The checks performed this weekend form part of the police's summer campaign against the background of the increase in reckless driving observed, due to the surge of festivities during this season.

“Charleroi will host the Quayside Flea Market, EURO football, and the music festivals this weekend alone,” Blaise stated, stressing the need for the campaign.

During the previous summer campaign, run in June 2023, nearly 28,000 drivers were checked, and 2.29% were found to have exceeded the legal blood alcohol limit.
