Some 600,000 tax returns still have to be filed online by 15 July, the Finance Ministry announced on Thursday.
Another 200,000 Belgians submit their tax returns on paper. However, time is running out for them as the deadline is Sunday 30 June.
The administration is expecting around 7.4 million returns. More than half of these are proposals for simplified declarations. Anyone who needs to add or rectify anything on such a proposal must do so before 30 June, if filing on paper, or 15 July via the Internet. However, 93% of these proposals (around 3.8 million copies) are not amended.
Of the 7.4 million returns, around 2.0 million must be submitted by 15 July. Since the counter was close to 1.4 million on Thursday afternoon, there are still 600,000 outstanding.
There are also a number of returns related to specific types of income, such as self-employed income or foreign-earned income. For these cases, the deadline is 16 October. The tax authorities estimate that there are 1.4 million such returns.
Anyone who fails to fulfill their duty as a taxpayer, or who submits their return late, is liable to a fine or a tax surcharge.
