A shooting took place just a stone's throw from the city centre of Brussels on Saturday evening, leaving one person critically injured. The perpetrator of the attack is still at large.

The incident occurred around 19:00 on Saturday on Avenue de  Stalingrad, near Anneessens Square – between Bruxelles-Midi railway station and Grand Place. Police officers and emergency services were called to the scene and delivered first aid to the "seriously injured" victim.

"The victim was taken to hospital for further treatment and is in life-threatening condition," the Brussels public prosecutor's office said. He is currently still in hospital.

Meanwhile, a security perimeter was set up by the police around the scene of the shooting "to preserve all traces useful for the investigation", and an investigation was started to look into the precise circumstances of the shooting, which remain unclear.

It is also ambiguous who is behind the shooting, as no suspects have been arrested. "The investigation is actively continuing and in the interest of the investigation, the public prosecutor's office is not commenting further on the case."

This marks the second shooting on the Brussels road in just four months. In May this year, two people riding a scooter opened fire towards a café located on Avenue de Stalingrad, claiming the life of a 28-year-old man. His family said he was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire.
