Train punctuality improved in July compared to the same period last year, according to data released by Belgian national railway company SNCB and network manager Infrabel on Tuesday.
Last month, punctuality rose to 91.4%, an increase from 91.1% in July 2023. This means that over nine in ten trains arrived at their terminal station, or at the first station of the Brussels North-Midi junction on their route, on time or with a delay of maximum six minutes, Infrabel specified.
In the first seven months of the year, punctuality reached 89.3%, up from 88.1% during the same period last year, SNCB noted.
External factors had the most significant impact on punctuality in July. The month was marked by several severe thunderstorms which disrupted railway traffic, with fallen branches and objects on the tracks and intrusions onto the rails. Train traffic was also disrupted across Belgium at the end of the month due to a major IT problem.
The number of breakdowns on the railway equipment was similar to the same period last year and better than in 2022, SNCB added.
