A man in his fifties has been arrested for accidental homicide for causing a fatal accident in Ruddervoorde (Oostkamp) in West Flanders on Saturday night that claimed three lives.

The driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, struck the rear of a family’s vehicle, killing the two parents and their eight-year-old daughter.

Overspeeding was a contributing factor in the collision. The 29-year-old father, 30-year-old mother and their young daughter were killed instantly.

The driver had a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit. His criminal record showed ten convictions for driving offences.

He could not be questioned immediately after the accident since he was too drunk and suffered from concussion. However, by Monday, investigators were able to interview him. The investigating judge decided to remand him in custody for accidental homicide, drunk driving and a series of traffic violations.

His hearing is scheduled for the end of the week.
