Friday morning will be largely grey and rainy across most of the country. The southern province of Luxembourg will be hit by heavy showers with thunderstorms, triggering a code yellow warning.

After two warm days, Belgium is being affected by a "wavy disturbance" extending from northern Europe to the Iberian Peninsula through this region," the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) said.

On Friday, a new wave will develop on top of this disturbance, "bringing a chance of rain and thunderstorms," it wrote on its website. The south of the country will be the worst hit.

"In the far southeast, we expect locally heavy showers with thunderstorms in the coming hours," the RMI said. "More than 20 mm of precipitation may fall over 6 hours."

A code yellow has been issued for possible thunderstorms from 08:00 until noon on Friday. Due to the forecasted weather, the Ministry of Interior has activated the helpline number 1722.

Anyone who has suffered storm or water damage requiring assistance from the fire brigade can apply via the e-counter or call the number 1722. Only for potentially life-threatening situations can people call the emergency number 112, to ensure that this line remains free for people in urgent need.

Rain before sunshine

It will rain over most of the country on Friday, especially earlier in the day. The weather will only stay dry in the coastal regions. Later, by the afternoon, the weather will become drier in the central parts of Belgium too. Temperatures will sit between 19 in the Ardennes and 25°C in the far south.

On Saturday and Sunday, an altitude wedge will stabilise the air mass and it will become summery again, the RMI said. The first day of the weekend will start a bit cloudy in the north but throughout the day, the sun will make a full appearance across all regions. High temperatures of 23°C can be expected by the sea, while in the south, these can reach 30°C.

Sunday will start out dry and relatively sunny, however, the RMI predicts that clouds will develop towards the end of the day, which could locally turn into (thundery) showers. Temperatures will range from 26°C to 30°C.

Monday will be more unstable with frequent showers, intensifying during the day, and possibly even becoming thundery.
