The Audi Brussels workers’ demonstration, scheduled for 16 September, has evolved into a national cross-sector mobilisation, according to Sor Hillal, the General Secretary of FGTB Metal.

"The case of Audi Brussels is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to rampant deindustrialisation in Europe and Belgium," trade unionist Hillal argues, amidst significant struggles faced by the automotive industry across the continent.

Trade unions, under the collective banner of FGTB-CSC-CGSLB, are therefore urging expansion of the movement to encompass the entire sector. Support is also being received from European unions.

The rallying cry, "The industry is ours," represents the unions’ hope to "mobilise as many people as possible for this large national demonstration."

Leading the procession will be Audi’s workers and subcontractors, leaving from Brussels-North Station at 10:3o on Monday 16 September and heading towards Luxembourg Square for speeches.

"With Van Hool yesterday, Audi and its subcontractors today, who’s next?" the unions worry.

"Belgium requires leading-edge reindustrialisation for its economy, vitality, and quality jobs. The austerity imposed by Europe is counterproductive on every level," the FGTB concluded in a statement.

On 9 July, shortly before the company closed for several weeks, Audi management had announced plans to restructure its Brussels plant, threatening nearly 3,000 jobs. Thus far, the workers have yet to return to work.
