EU provides €40 million to prepare Ukrainians for winter

The European Union will provide an additional €40 million in humanitarian aid in Ukraine ahead of an expected harsh winter, the European Commission announced on Friday.

Amid Russia’s large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the EU has determined to step up its support in Ukraine.  The money will primarly assist Ukrainians prepare for the winter.

"Russia’s war on Ukraine has continued to escalate in 2024 with no end in sight, putting civilian lives in constant danger. The approaching winter will only add to their hardships," stated Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, in a press release.

In partnerships with humanitarian organisations, the EU aims to repair damaged buildings, ensure electricity and heating, and provide shelter for those in need, the Commission explained in a press release.

While €35 million will go towards projects inside Ukraine, the remaining €5 million is designated for Ukrainian refugees living in neighbouring Moldova.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has provided €966 million in aid to Ukraine, with €71 million specifically targetting refugees in Moldova.
