A 72-year-old man from Marche-en-Famenne has been sentenced to four years in prison for armed rebellion and malicious disruption of traffic.

The man repeatedly tried to evade the police while carrying drugs in his car.

On 4 May 2024, local police fired at a vehicle attempting to escape a checkpoint at the entrance to Marche-en-Famenne.

The elderly man at the wheel was returning from Liège, having obtained cocaine for sale in the local region.

In both December 2022 and August 2023, he was intercepted returning from Liège with drugs intended for resale locally. His August arrest led to a car chase, culminating in the fugitive ramming his vehicle into the officers.

On Friday, the Criminal Court of Marche pronounced a four-year prison sentence for the man, for maliciously disrupting traffic and armed rebellion.

Additionally, a fine of €16,000 was imposed and over €124,000 were confiscated. The defendant’s lawyer, Sylvain Danneels, informed the court they intend to appeal the verdict.
