A 28-year-old Belgian woman has tragically lost her life while in Thailand.

A search operation was launched on Saturday in the Thai province of Mae Hong Son, in the north-west of the country after the woman had been reported missing.

After having discovered the body, local authorities are reportedly treating the incident as an accident.

The Belgian Embassy in Bangkok has been alerted, according to an announcement by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs made to the Belgian News Agency Belga on Saturday evening.

"This case is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels as well as the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok. We can confirm that the individual is a Belgian citizen," the Ministry stated.

The woman had been reported missing on Saturday. According to local media, the 28-year-old was last seen leaving her home on her bicycle, which was discovered abandoned on Saturday near a path leading to the Mae Yen waterfall.

No further details were given about the circumstances of the death. As this is a personal case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refrained from further comment.
