A shooting in the Model City district of the Brussels municipality of Laeken has left one person in critical condition.
Police were called to the Model City in Laeken at 01:50 in the morning after gunshots were reported by locals.
Multiple patrol units were dispatched to the scene where they found a severely injured individual, who was still conscious. Immediate first aid was administered on-site before emergency services arrived.
The critically injured individual was then transported to hospital. Prosecutors from Brussels attended the scene at Model City later in the morning, confirming an investigation has been set up.
Following the analysis of the ballistic expert and the federal police's forensic laboratory on the scene, a judge was appointed early Sunday morning to investigate the attempted murder. The Federal Judicial Police has also taken over the investigations.
Officers found a shell casing at the scene and made an arrest. However, the apprehended individual was later released, as they seemingly have no relation to the incident.
The exact circumstances and motive remain unclear for now, according to a Sunday afternoon statement from the prosecution.
The Model City is a modernist low-income housing program in Laeken, part of the City of Brussels municipality.
