September marks the twelfth consecutive month with above-average rainfall in Belgium, a phenomenon unseen since 1833 when observations of the Royal Meteorological Institute began.

No less than 66.5 millimetres of rainfall have been recorded in Uccle since 1 September, outpacing the monthly average of 65 millimetres.

"We last experienced such a prolonged period of heavy rainfall from 2001 to 2002, with 1,182 millimetres recorded over twelve months," highlighted meteorologist David Dehenauw, clarifying that the record was broken on Wednesday morning.

This enduring spell of higher-than-average monthly rainfall can partly be attributed to climate change.

"We are encountering more extreme weather patterns, characterised by extended periods of drought followed by long spells of rain," Dehenauw added.

As for October and November, it is challenging to predict if this trend will continue, as the seasonal forecast models are not sending "clear signals."
