The Belgian Competition Authority’s (BMA) auditors are conducting on Wednesday searches at businesses involved in the bus and coach passenger transport sector over suspicions of price-fixing.
This involves a number of searches at various locations across Belgium, targeting well-known players serving the local markets. The auditors have reported
Accused companies allegedly run bus trips for public transport companies De Lijn and TEC, covering every segment from public transport to student transport and travel.
The auditors’ statement noted they retained information which suggests these firms might be involved in agreements or coordinated practices regarding pricing, market division, bid collusions and other contracts, and even actions contrary to non-solicitation practices, in violation of Section IV.1 of the Economic Law Code and/or Section 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
The Competition Authority emphasises that a search is just a preliminary step in an investigation into restrictive competition practices, and it does not prejudge the investigation’s outcome.
The Federation of Belgian Bus and Coach Operators (FBAA) acknowledged the report on Wednesday afternoon but could not provide further information.
Public transport company De Lijn took note of the news and is awaiting more information.
