Over eight in ten electric cars in Belgium are in name of company

Belgium counted 6,089,564 passenger cars on 1 August 2024 – a 1.0% increase from the previous year.

The number of fully electric passenger cars rose by 83.2% over the year to 254,240, Remarkably, 82.0% of these electric cars are registered to companies. The findings are according to new figures from Statbel, the Belgian statistical office.

Statbel states that although electric cars are gaining popularity in Belgium, only 45,348 electric cars (17.8%) are owned by individuals, while 208,542 are owned by companies.

The number of hybrid cars increased by 32.1% over the year to 710,687. Company cars are also prevalent among hybrids but to a lesser extent than purely electric cars.

There are 394,969 hybrid cars registered to companies (55.6%) and 313,072 owned by individuals (44.1%).

Out of the more than six million passenger cars in Belgium, nearly 1.25 million are registered to companies.

Petrol cars make up 51.4% of the passenger car fleet, followed by diesel cars at 31.8%, hybrid cars at 11.7%, electric cars at 4.2%, and gas-powered cars at 0.4%.
