Complaints filed against ULB students for promoting racial hatred and discrimination

Several students at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) have been accused of participating in a group that promotes racial hatred and discrimination, according to the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Around ten students and activists received summonses from the Brussels police at the end of August. They are accused of criminal activities that could lead to preventive detention, the student movement had reported in early September.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that there were multiple complaints targeting various individuals, including members of the occupancy movement.

Students occupied the ULB’s Solbosch campus during protests in May and June against the university’s collaboration with Israeli institutions, and against Israeli violence in Gaza.

The allegations against the students include promoting racial hatred and discrimination, as well as damaging property. The Office declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

The student movement denies the allegations. These are “bureaucratic measures aimed at intimidating a just political movement,” it claimed.

The names of the accused have not been released.
