The popular 'ReThinking Collections' exhibition at the Africa Museum in Tervuren highlights research into the provenance of art and cultural objects and has drawn over 50,000 visitors since January.
Originally set to close at the end of September, the museum has now announced that it will be extended until 1 December due to popular demand.
Most of the museum's collections were acquired in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo during Belgium's colonial period. There is growing public interest in provenance research and the issue of the restitution of artefacts to their countries of origin.
The exhibition addresses critical questions about how objects in the collection ended up in Tervuren. Some items were taken by means of violence or theft, while others were acquired legally but still impacted African communities.
The Africa Museum aims to offer new perspectives on the future of these collections.
