Food-focused film festival AlimenTERRE is returning to Belgium, bringing a series of films on the topic of food and its ethics to venues in Wallonia and Brussels from 4 to 19 October.

For 16 years, the international film festival has offered a selection of films that highlight agricultural and food related issues in the world, and propose alternatives to address these challenges on a local and global scale.

It is held every year in Belgium, as well as in other countries in Europe and Africa, during the month of October to coincide with World Food Day (16 October). An opening weekend will take place at the Vendôme Cinema in Ixelles between 4 and 6 October, followed by screenings across Wallonia.

In total, 21 international films, including feature films, short films, and animations, will be showcased in 88 screenings at cinemas, farms, cultural centres, group housing, and co-working spaces.

Nine films will compete for the AlimenTERRE Citizen Jury Prize, and three others for the Special Prize, awarded by a jury of Belgian and Congolese students.

"AlimenTERRE is a collective tale of committed women and men and supportive associations. The festival continues to grow, strengthen its partnerships, and expand its network in French-speaking Belgium, building strong connections,” said organisers Humundi, an NGO formerly called SOS Faim. Humundi is dedicated to fighting food insecurity, poverty and inequality by promoting equitable and sustainable food systems, guaranteeing healthy food for all.

In addition to film screenings, numerous other activities are on the programme, such as themed debates, round tables, and workshops for all ages. Theatre, improvisation, graphic novels, and stand-up comedy will also feature, encouraging citizens to take action in various ways.

The Belgian edition will launch the international tour of the AlimenTERRE festival, which is also organised in 17 countries across Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
