Damage detected to the concrete casing over the Doel 4 nuclear reactor

Damage has been found on the outer casing over the Doel 4 nuclear reactor during an inspection, according to a report in Le Soir newspaper, confirmed by operator Engie.

Last year, the government decided to extend the operation of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors. Originally slated for closure in 2025, the reactors will now provide electricity until 2035. Inspections were conducted in Doel as part of this extension.

Inspectors identified damage to the reinforcement of the concrete on the outer casing of the reactor, according to Engie spokeswoman Hellen Smeets. Further investigation is required. As a result, the nuclear plant will remain out of service for a longer period.

The reactor was initially scheduled to resume the generation of power on 23 October. This has now been postponed to 30 November.
