Major works are due to start on Monday on the Brussels Ring Road near Anderlecht, Brussels Mobility announced on Tuesday. The works, which will last until the end of December, could add up to 45 minutes to the journey, the regional department warned.
The bridge over Boulevard Sylvain Dupuis in Anderlecht, used by R0 commuters, is in need of repair. Its deck is cracked, which is why the maximum speed on the ring road has been limited to 50km/hr. on this section since July, while the passage under the bridge is reduced to a single lane in each direction.
Work on the ring road itself is expected to last until 20 December. It will result in the closure of the inner ring between kilometres 54 and 53. As a result, traffic will be shifted to the outer ring, where two lanes will be dedicated to each direction of traffic and speed limits will apply.
During this period, access to the outer ring via the slip road from the Ninove carriageway will be closed. Users will be able to use the slip road at Avenue d'Itterbeek to enter the ring.
These measures will have a major impact on traffic, especially at peak times, warns Brussels Mobility. The agency estimates the extra travel time at up to 45 minutes.
These works are in addition to those being carried out by the Flemish Region at Léonard Junction. Brussels Mobility is therefore advising motorists to use alternatives to their cars or, at the very least, to avoid the R0 ring road.
The second phase of the Anderlecht works, the refurbishing of the outer ring road towards Mons, will be completed in Summer 2025.
