During last Sunday’s municipal elections in Ninove, 1,618 proxy votes were cast, Flemish media reported on Thursday after reviewing the election records.
The documents detail the number of proxy votes in each of the 46 polling stations, totalling 1,618 proxy votes, which accounts for 7% of all votes in this East Flanders municipality where the far-right achieved an absolute majority.
The authorities seized all proxy votes in Ninove on Sunday due to suspicions of electoral fraud. It is now up to the judiciary to determine how many of these proxies were potentially falsified or obtained fraudulently.
Guy D’haeseleer’s Forza Ninove list (part of Vlaams Belang) won 47.4% of the votes on Sunday, securing an absolute majority in the municipal council with a margin of 106 votes.
