An Eritrean woman was killed in front of her friends in Yvoir, Namur on Monday.
Hagos T. was a 22-year-old resident in the Red Cross asylum reception centre in Yvoir, a small village in Wallonia.
On Monday evening, as she hung out with friends next to La Tonnelle restaurant, she was approached by her ex-partner who stabbed her in the throat and threw her body into the Meuse river.
Emergency services arrived to the scene but were unable to remove Hagos from the water. Her body was discovered two kilometres downstream.
The incident was confirmed by the Namur Public Prosecutor's Office and the suspect has been arrested.
"A man and his girlfriend got into an argument on the banks of the Meuse in Yvoir," it stated. "The man, born in 1999, allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the victim in the throat [...] the suspect was detained immediately."
'In shock'
Hagos arrived to Belgium with her partner in April 2023 and had been living in the Red Cross reception centre until her death. When they separated her partner moved to another centre. Hagos had claimed asylum.
The Red Cross has organised psychological assistance for its residents following the incident. "The workers at Yvoir and the entire Belgian Red Cross are in shock. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our resident," the organisation told SudInfo.
