Nine boats carrying 572 people were intercepted on Saturday as they attempted to cross the Channel, the UK Home Office reported on Sunday.
This brings the total number of migrants arriving this year to 32,691, a 22% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 26,699 arrivals. However, it remains 18% lower than in November 2022, which recorded 39,929 arrivals.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently initiated efforts to intercept criminal gangs smuggling migrants via the Western Balkans, aiming to reduce the number of small boat crossings.
During a meeting of the European Political Community in Budapest on Thursday, Starmer announced agreements to enhance the sharing of intelligence, expertise, and cooperation with Serbia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the bodies of four individuals were found in the waters off the coast of Calais, according to the French coastguard.
On Tuesday, Kent Police in England reported that the body of a man was also retrieved from the Channel in Dover.
