Flights from Charleroi Airport are disrupted on Thursday morning due to the winter weather conditions, according to an airport spokesperson. Around 40 flights are affected throughout the morning.
"The inspection carried out this morning at the runway opening showed it wasn’t safe enough despite the preventive measures in place," spokesperson Nathalie Pierard explained. The runway was therefore opened at 07:30 instead of the usual 06:30.
Around 15 flights were scheduled during this peak morning hour. "Additionally, de-icing the planes takes time," added Pierard.
No flights have been cancelled, but the delays have caused a domino effect. "These delays should be resolved by the end of the morning. In total, around 40 flights are affected," estimated the spokesperson.
At Brussels Airport, flights have also been delayed due to winter weather conditions.
A spokesperson for Brussels Airport said that delays at Brussels Airport were caused by de-icing of the runway this morning, but that waiting times are now "reducing".
The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) had issued a yellow warning for slippery conditions from Wednesday night to Thursday morning across all provinces, except for West Flanders. In Hainaut, the alert was in effect until 08:00 on Thursday morning.
