The Metropolitan Police in London announced on Friday morning that they had detonated a "suspicious package" near the US Embassy.
"We can confirm that the 'loud bang’ heard in the area recently was a controlled explosion carried out by our officers," said the Metropolitan Police on social media, adding that an investigation is underway.
Earlier, the police had stated they were alerted to an "incident near the US Embassy," located in the Nine Elms area in South London.
"A cordon is in place in the area as a precaution while officers investigate a suspicious package," they added. The US Embassy, on X, also stated that "local authorities are examining a suspicious package outside" the building.
