An explosion occurred at an apartment building in Antwerp late on Sunday night, causing significant damage to the entrance hall. Local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The explosion occurred at around 02:30 on Saturday night in an apartment building on the Linkeroever in Antwerp, located on Esmoreitlaan, according to Antwerp police. No one was injured and the building did not need to be evacuated.
However, the explosion did cause severe damage to the entrance hall: the letterboxes were on fire and both the door front and windows in the back were completely blown off.
A resident saw the suspected perpetrator arriving by bicycle, with a hood over his head. A loud bang and a flash of light followed. A search for potential suspects in the vicinity yielded no immediate results.
Police are investigating the context and circumstances of the explosion. The Federal Judicial Police and bomb disposal unit DOVO are assisting with the investigation.
Antwerp has experienced several drug-related attacks, but further investigation is required to determine if this incident is connected. For now, police are still investigating all leads. As the building houses 140 people, police also need to investigate who the attack was directed at.
