Seventh consecutive season of above-average rainfall in Belgium

Autumn marked the seventh consecutive season of above-average rainfall in Belgium, according to a newly released report by the Royal Meteorological Institute’s (IRM).

This occurrence is only the second time since observations began in 1833. The previous record was between spring 1924 and winter 1926, with eight consecutive wetter seasons.

A total of 275.9 mm of rain fell over 50 days this autumn, surpassing the average of 209.3 mm over 48.5 days.

September and November were particularly wet, while October was slightly drier. The heaviest rainfall was recorded on 9 October, with 82 mm in Sugny, Wallonia.

Autumn 2024 was also significantly less sunny than average, with 259 hours and 47 minutes of sunshine compared to the average of 332 hours and 52 minutes.

There were no completely sunny days, a first since records began in 1981.

The season was slightly warmer than usual, with an average temperature of 11.8 degrees Celsius compared to the normal of 11.2 degrees.

Temperatures ranged from -10.2 degrees on 22 November in Saint-Vith to 33.8 degrees on 1 September in Liège-Monsin.
