Local police had to rescue two men from a marsh in Puurs-Sint-Amands, in Antwerp, following a failed burglary.

The two Albanian men, aged 29 and 36, had broken into a home when a security alarm went off, prompting them to flee the scene. But their escape route led them to a sticky situation.

The security alarm alerted the local authorities, who rushed to the scene of the burglary in Donkstraat, in Rivierenland. A local resident told the police that he had seen two men fleeing through his garden.

The police called in a drone team to help with the search operation. The two men were eventually spotted in a nearby nature reserve, running towards and crossing a nearby railway line. However, on the other side, they ended up in a boggy forest.

"They got stuck and sank to their chest," says police spokesperson Elke Wauters. "Our inspectors then decided to pull the suspects out of the water. They still clung to the bushes and behaved unruly, but eventually had to give in."

The two men were given a dry clothes by the authorities. The suspects were then arraigned before the investigating judge for  breaking and entering. They have since been arrested.
