Many Syrians living in Belgium gathered on Sunday afternoon in the Cureghem district of Anderlecht to celebrate the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

According to Anderlecht’s mayor, Fabrice Cumps, around 600 people are currently participating in a procession. The gathering began near the Chaussée de Mons, where many Syrian-owned businesses are located.

“The demonstration is festive for now but the police fear that other groups might join in the evening and cause disturbances,” Cumps commented.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, rebel groups led by radical Islamists entered the Syrian capital and announced the “liberation” of Damascus and the “flight” of the “tyrant” Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power for 24 years.

It is not yet clear where Bashar al-Assad, who left via Damascus airport, has fled to.
