Local police have arrested a suspect for allegedly starting a fire at a Delhaize store in Antwerp on Wednesday, the Antwerp Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Friday.
The suspect, whose face was covered, entered the Delhaize store on Museumstraat in Antwerp on Wednesday morning. He poured a liquid on a shelf, set it alight, and fled the scene.
The fire was quickly contained, but the store remained closed for the rest of the day due to damage caused by the automatic extinguishing system. No injuries were reported.
The 21-year-old man will appear before the investigating judge.
Two weeks earlier, another supermarket in the neighbourhood – a Colruyt store – was hit by several explosions. An individual had thrown three incendiary bombs inside. There is reportedly no connection between the two incidents.
