Belgium’s Explosive Disposal Service (SEDEE) destroyed some 3,100 munitions this year.

Most of these munition are linked to unexploded projectiles from the First and Second World Wars where SEDEE dismantle them at its “Static Detonation Chamber” facility in Langemark-Poelkappelle.

Nearly 3,000 interventions were conducted nationwide, including 2,000 in West Flanders, according to figures provided by the Governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwe, to N-VA provincial councillor Kurt Himpe.

“This is, of course, linked to the First and Second World Wars,” Himpe confirmed.

In 2023, around 2,400 munitions were destroyed.
