The body of a woman in her sixties who went missing on New Year's Eve has been found in Bruges, local police reported on Friday.
The 61-year-old woman had been missing since Wednesday after celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Santa Cruz café in Sint-Kruis. She left the venue at around 00:45 and had not been seen since.
A missing person notice was issued on Wednesday at the request of the West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office. Search efforts took place in the area on Thursday but were unsuccessful.
On Friday, passers-by reported seeing an object floating in the water near Dampoort, which turned out to be the body of the missing woman.
The West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office has appointed a forensic doctor to investigate the circumstances of the death.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victim died accidentally, having fallen into the water on her way home.
