An American organisation, Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), which organises races between self-driving cars, is launching a spin-off in Belgium.

The company will be based in Sint-Truiden, with investment from Limburg company LRM and insurer Ethias, according to newspaper De Tijd.

IAC, LRM and Ethias are jointly investing €5 million in the new venture, called Aidoptation. A larger funding round is expected in the future.

Aidoptation aims to develop commercial applications based on IAC’s knowledge and intellectual property.

The autonomous vehicles will operate from DronePort, located at the former military airport in Brustem, near Sint-Truiden. This facility includes a 3-kilometre-long landing strip with branches.

The decision to locate in Belgium was influenced by the strategic proximity to innovation centres and the presence of international institutions.
