The Mouvement Réformateur (MR) is calling for an "immediate review" of the system of double registration of leases in Brussels, the Liberal group in the region's Parliament announced on Wednesday in a press release.
Since 1 January, Brussels landlords need to have their residential leases recorded in a register managed by the region, in addition to doing so at federal level.
This applies only to registered leases signed on or after 1 January 2025. An existing lease may be registered on the Brussels platform, but this is not compulsory.
A case seeking a ruling on whether one of the two obligations should be repealed is pending before the Constitutional Court, following an appeal by the federal government.
The MR, which sat in the regional opposition and the federal majority during the previous legislature, points an accusing finger at former Secretary of State for Housing Nawal Ben Hamou (Parti Socialiste).
"This administrative chaos could have been avoided if the Secretary of State for Housing had adopted a cooperative rather than confrontational approach with the federal government," Brussels parliamentarian Louis de Clippele (MR) is quoted as saying in the press release.
"By acting without consultation, the previous government ignored the warnings of the opposition and the Council of State," he added.
The MR is calling for an "immediate review of this policy [...] in order to ensure that administrative procedures are simplified for citizens and to restore constructive collaboration between the levels of power."
