A 12-year-old boy has died in a serious traffic accident on the E40 in Veurne, confirmed by the federal police and the Veurne division of the West Flanders Prosecutor’s Office.
The accident occurred in the early hours on Thursday morning on the E40 in Veurne. The vehicle was carrying a family of six, who sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The family was travelling towards France when it overturned at around 01:00, ending up in a ditch. The 12-year-old British boy was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Emergency services arrived swiftly and managed to resuscitate the boy. He was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The five other passengers, including four children, were also taken to the hospital.
Initially, the cause of the accident was unclear. A traffic expert was dispatched to the scene by the Veurne division of the West Flanders Prosecutor’s Office.
Preliminary findings suggest that poor weather conditions and aquaplaning played a role, combined with excessive speed. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
