The Red Cross appealed for blood donations on Sunday evening as hospitals face a significant blood shortage.

Currently, they have 1,000 blood bags, but three times that amount is needed to meet hospital needs. The current high activity at hospitals has increased the need for blood transfusions.

"Despite our appeal and the generosity of our donors over the festive period, blood collection did not reach the expected levels," stated the Belgian Red Cross in a press release.

Recent weather conditions, particularly icy roads, have discouraged people from donating blood.

"This situation is slowing down the proper care of patients for whom transfusions are part of the treatment. Current stocks only cover urgent short-term needs," the Red Cross added.

Regular and new donors can find more information here, or by calling 0800 92 245 or emailing info@croix-rouge.be.
