Delhaize has reached an agreement to acquire all shares of Delfood SA from the Louis Delhaize group, the supermarket chain announced on Monday.
This acquisition includes all 325 Louis Delhaize stores, other shops supplied by Delfood, as well as logistics services and the headquarters in Belgium.
Delhaize aims to strengthen its position on the Belgian retail market, particularly in the convenience store segment, through this acquisition.
The Louis Delhaize group believes that selling Delfood to Delhaize is the best option to secure the future of the business and its employees.
The news comes two days after a press release by trade union SETCa criticised Delhaize's focus on the franchise model and the subsequent approach to redundancy plans.
The purchase marks 150 years since the first Louis Delhaize store opened in 1875, as the brand joins Delhaize's portfolio.
The agreement is still subject to approval by the Belgian competition authority.
