A court in Liège has dismissed all charges against a man in his 40s who was clocked speeding at 124 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. He will not face any penalties.

The driver, a lorry operator, was caught speeding in 2021 in Saint-Nicolas (Liège) claiming he was rushing because his daughter was ill and needed urgent attention.

The police court initially fined him €1,200 and imposed a 100-day driving ban. However, the prosecutor appealed, arguing that the penalty was too harsh considering he had no prior offences.

On Monday, the man appeared before the judge, seeking leniency to retain his lorry driving licence. The judge ruled the case time-barred under a new law, noting he should have been summoned earlier in 2023.

"You escape prosecution because we can no longer pursue it," the judge explained. He advised the defendant to drive slower and call an ambulance or seek help from those closer to his daughter in emergencies.
