French customs authorities have raised the alarm over libido-enhancing honey after seizing over 13 tonnes of the illegal product at the Port of Marseille in November.
This honey, often imported from Malaysia, Turkey, Tunisia, and Thailand, contains active ingredients like sildenafil or tadalafil, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction and are regulated as medications, according to customs officials.
Consumption could be hazardous to health due to the lack of dosage information and potential side effects.
The import of this banned honey has surged in recent years in France. The Marseille shipment included 860,000 libido-boosting honey sticks from Malaysia. Customs documents labelled it as natural honey, but analysis revealed it contained active ingredients prescribed for erectile dysfunction.
German customs authorities also report a dangerous trend, noting that libido-enhancing honey is sold under various brand names as shots or sticks in small shops or online, claiming to promote fitness and health.
"Buyers are often unaware of or underestimate the potential dangers of these products," officials stated.
For example, 80 kilograms of libido-enhancing honey were found in travellers’ luggage at Cologne-Bonn airport last year, according to customs figures.
Similarly, a few kilograms of this honey were confiscated from a shop in Baden-Württemberg last year.
