Outgoing Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) believes Europe could take a firmer stance against US President Donald Trump's policies.

"Greenland is part of Denmark. End of story. That discussion ends here," De Croo declared on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday.

The annual event brings together Heads of State, business leaders, economists and experts to discuss major global issues. Although Trump is in Washington, his shadow hangs over the discussions. De Croo argues that the billionaire's arrival in the White House should prompt Europe to bolster its economic and political strength.

"We are entering a world where we need to flex our muscles from time to time," he said.

'The United States is not the only player'

It is in everyone's interest to avoid a trade war between Europe and the United States, De Croo warns.

"But the United States is not the only player in the world. For example, the agreement with the South American Mercosur countries is beneficial, including for our country, and there is also trade with India," he continued. "We are clear: the European market is very attractive but access to it is based on reciprocity."

De Croo considers the US preoccupation with the EU trade deficit to be a "legitimate concern". He suggests that Europe could increase its import of gas and military supplies from its transatlantic neighbour. However the departing Belgian premier stressed the need for Europe to put forward a strong response to Trump's belligerence.

Crucially, De Croo said whilst the EU should not react to every "cry or tweet" from Trump, it cannot allow the President's provocations to go unchecked. This is especially true regarding Trump's wish to annex Greenland. "We cannot dismiss it. It creates a certain atmosphere. We should have reacted much more firmly."
