Six men have been arrested in eastern Germany for stealing nearly 100 kilograms of wild garlic bulbs.
The suspects were apprehended after police noticed a strong garlic smell coming from their car, authorities said on Tuesday.
Three of the men were detained near Wermsdorf in the state of Saxony after a police check revealed the strong odour.
During the search, officers discovered several shopping bags filled with wild garlic bulbs, also known as ramsons, and gardening tools in the boot of the car.
The other suspects were later captured in Leipzig. For years, the theft of wild garlic bulbs has been an issue for the police around Leipzig.
Some groups harvest excessive quantities from protected areas, hoping to sell them to restaurants. Strict rules govern the collection of the plant.
